Three lakes loop
This hike begins with one of the best views of Lago Azul, then a 30-minute walk down to the lake and a boat crossing to the south-east shore. From there a 45-minute walk takes you to Lago Las Rocas. Another boat crosses Las Rocas, then a 20-minute walk reaches Lago Inferior. A third boat takes you across to the Segundo Corral sector, for a final 45-minute walk down to the road, where the car is waiting to bring you back to Puerto Urrutia.
There is the option of having lunch with the Wagner family on their land at Lago Inferior — a German settler family who serve an incredible meal in which everything is produced by them.
Trekking + jetboat — Puerto Urrutia to Las Rosas
This hike starts by crossing the Puelo River to pick up a trail along the west bank. The trail takes you to the Las Rosas sector — about an hour and a half of walking. A boat picks you up there, takes you to see the walkway sector, and then returns you to Puerto Urrutia by river.
There is the option of visiting Las Raíces, a permaculture centre, where they take you through the orchards, explain how their productive system works, and close the visit with a forest bath.
Ventisquero hiking + packraft (2 or 3 days)
Day 1 — The trip starts in the Primer Corral sector, where the trek into the Ventisquero Valley begins. This is 15 km, roughly 6 hours, of low difficulty along a beautiful trail that follows the Ventisquero River. It ends at the Rincón Bonito or Las Vertientes sector, where you spend the night.
Day 2 — Packraft (inflatable kayak) down the Ventisquero and Puelo rivers back to Puerto Urrutia. The whole return is on the water: a low-difficulty float of about 6 hours with incredible views of the valley.
There is the option of spending an extra day in Ventisquero, with day trips to the viewpoints, to the head of the valley, or along the river.
Puerto Urrutia to El Bolsón, Argentina (2 days)
Day 1 — Departure to Lago Inferior, via Segundo Corral or via the Tres Lagos route. A boat takes you first to the Carabineros checkpoint to clear Chilean customs, then to the eastern tip of Lago Inferior. From there a 20-minute walk reaches Lago Puelo, where another boat takes you to the gendarmería to clear Argentine customs and on to the Lago Puelo dock. Transport there takes you into El Bolsón — good food, a town worth knowing, and a wonderful craft fair. We book you a local hotel, cabin or hostel for the night.
Day 2 — The same as day 1, in reverse, back into Chile.
Bring your passport. Both customs posts must be cleared on the way out and on the way back.
Rafting
Starts in Puerto Urrutia and runs down to the Santo Domingo sector, passing through El Portón — an incredible stretch where the entire river narrows into a 15-metre box and the big rapids begin. Class III–IV, about 3.5 hours.
Family float
Starts in the Primer Corral sector and drifts down the Puelo River by raft or packraft, with wonderful views of the valley. Class II rapids.
Fishing
- Packraft — floating and fishing down the river, from the La Pasarela sector to Puerto Urrutia.
- Boat — leaving from Puerto Urrutia, working up and down the river.
- El Portón — by kataraft or raft, from Puerto Urrutia down to Santo Domingo.
